Sustainable Safe Food Systems in Africa: Moving towards a Sustainable Food Future.

The Regional workshop for Food Security Center, University of Nairobi on “Sustainable Safe Food Systems in Africa: Moving towards a Sustainable Food Future”  was held on 23rd till 26th September, 2019 at the Nelson Mandela Conference Hall in the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, University of Nairobi. The summit was organized by the University of Nairobi as a strategic partner and sponsored through grants from DAAD under the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany in conjunction with the Food Security Centre of the University of Hohenheim in Germany. The theme of the workshop was centered on SDGs; Sustainable Safe Food Systems in Africa: Moving towards a Sustainable Food Future. The workshop aimed to provide insights and information on how the African food systems can be enhanced through Science, Technology and Innovation to provide safe and high quality diets to the growing population and address food and nutrition insecurity to contribute towards zero hunger and poverty (#ZeroHunger; #ZeroPoverty).

The Keynote speakers included Dr. Lamis Jomaa an assistant professor at the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) and also serve as the co-director of the Refugee Health Program within the Global Health Institute and a member of the Food Security Program Executive Committee at AUB.  Prof Sado Kamdem, an Associate Professor at the University of Yaounde  in Cameroon teaching and doing research in the areas of Food microbiology and safety, predictive food microbiology, food science and technology, Food security.

The Youth were encouraged to have patience and persistence in starting up business from their innovations and technologies for better commercialization of the same. The workshop  which had over 10 nationalities representing Africa was a major success and the youth attending had positive remarks and wished to be engaged in future FSC activities.
